An ingenious 19th century adjustable table with a decorative cast iron base and oak table top. The height can go from almost ground level up to approx 100cm and is counterbalanced by the ornate cast iron base. Making it useable at both standing and seated height.

The table top can also be adjusted to different angles and has a raised lip on both sides to hold things in place, ideal for artists, readers, musicians or even laptop users.

The base has small wheels on the two legs to help with moving the table around.

The cast iron base is stamped with W.T & S. This is the mark for William Tonks & Sons, a Birmingham based brass foundry. The company was started by William Bedington around 1790 and was later joined by George and William Tonks, the company became known as Bedington Tonks and Co. The partnership was dissolved in 1852, after which they continued as William Tonks & Sons until 1889.

William Tonks & Sons was renowned for the quality of their brass and metalwork, winning awards at exhibitions in London and at the 1855 Paris Exhibition. Alongside architectural hardware, they also produced aesthetic, ecclesiastical and arts and crafts metal work, supplying firms such as Liberty’s.

The table is in generally good condition for its age with only light wear to the table top.
