James Henry Wess was born in Liverpool in 1933. He attended Liverpool College of Art, his first solo exhibition was at The Manor House, Ilkley.

He was primarily a sculptor but also a keen ceramicist. His art pottery is often of a very sculptural and decorative form, such as this striking piece from the early 1970s.

The inside and outer lip is glazed but the exterior surface is unglazed, giving it a rough textured finish.
