Dutch Folk Art Carved Wood Foot Stove
A charming handmade traditional foot stove. They were commonly used in the Netherlands in the 17th and 18th centuries, and are often depicted in Dutch interior scenes from this time. They were also found in neighbouring European countries and the American colonies.
A bowl of hot coals would be placed inside the box, you would then sit with a blanket over yourself and the box, the heat would rise through the holes in the top to warm your feet and legs during bitterly cold winters. They were not only functional but people spent a lot of time making them and carving decorative and meaningful details into their exterior.
They became scarce and collectible once modern alternatives became available in the late 19th/early 20th century. This example was lovingly made as a Valentine’s gift in 1980. There are symbolic carvings on the top and initials on the sides.
Measures 26cm x 18cm x 21cm.
