c.1900. The subject of this magic lantern is taken from an illustration of St Paul’s Cathedral engulfed in flames during the Great Fire of London in 1666. It was originally drawn by the prolific Bohemian graphic artist, Wenceslaus Hollar (1607-1677).

The Latin phrase on the top of the illustration “Etiam periere Ruince”, translates as “even the ruins have perished”. It is believed to have been said by Julius Caesar when he visited Troy.
