Antique Georgian Leather Tub Chair
c.1800. This characterful Georgian armchair is not only attractive but also very comfortable, an ideal reading chair!
The black leather upholstery shows how much this chair has been loved. The leather is extensively crackled on the seat and worn smooth on the arms. We have conditioned the leather with wax to help with the longevity. None of the cracks have currently split right through. There is one hole on the side under the arm.
The leather on the seat and inner of the back looks to be original, but the oil wax covering hugging around the back of the chair looks to be a little later, likely later 19th century. It’s very probable that the chair originally had the wood frame exposed on the back and sides, as was fashionable with these Georgian tub chairs. There is a trace of an old brown label on the back, it should be removable if preferred without.
The frame is solid, no loose joints etc. There are metal brackets under each leg to support the slender legs under the weight of the seat. The black lacquer finish on the legs is worn, with the wood showing through in places.
