19th Century Carved Ballot Box/Book Case

An unusual and intriguing piece of furniture dating from the 19th century. The box base has an envelope width slot in the top, suggesting it was used like a ballot box, or something similar. The base has a door which would have originally opened from the side but due to aging and damage to the hinged area, it now opens from the top with hinges on the bottom. The centre of the door has a deep curved handle decorated with a devilish face sticking out its tongue.
The door has a substantial lock (not functioning) which further confirms that the box was intended to contain important private documents/ vote slips or monetary donations etc.
One small section of trim missing, not visible from front.
